Ain't it true?

I get awkward when someone compliments me and I don't know what to say.
Someone: you look pretty today
Me: happy birthday
I saw this on Twitter from @hilarioustruth and immediately thought, "that's me." I've just never been that type of person who gracefully accepts compliments or acknowledges them. I'm the other kind. The one who turns it into a joke, mumbles something intelligible, brushes it off or a combination of two or all three.
I might be getting better at it though because I get quite a bit these days. Professional ones, thankfully. They're easier to handle. From my students, my colleagues and my bosses. It's a bit easier with the first, I can thank them and praise them for being lovely students. With the other two, sometimes I still struggle to meet their eye but I mostly manage to mumble "thanks."
I really don't know what it is. I'll just blame it on all bizarre things that I do. My sister dropped me on my head when I was a baby.
